Serra de Tramuntana

Tramuntana Gastronomic Week

Launched to address the ongoing decline of the primary sector in the Serra de Tramuntana, Gastronomic Week is an initiative that emphasizes the importance of local food culture as a vital connection between the community and their land. In response to changing dietary habits and a growing disconnection from traditional practices, this project offers an annual opportunity to explore and celebrate the region’s rich culinary traditions. Each edition features a week-long series of activities, including guided tours, cooking workshops, seminars, and a culinary competition, each centered around a unique culinary theme.

The Challenge

The Serra de Tramuntana, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape, faces a critical challenge: the accelerated abandonment of its primary sector. This decline, driven by shifts in modern food consumption and weakening ties to the land, threatens the region's cultural and ecological sustainability. Revitalizing and promoting the local food culture is essential to preserving the traditions and livelihoods that have shaped the Serra for generations.

The Solution

Gastronomic Week aims to reconnect the community with their culinary heritage by highlighting the deep cultural significance of food in the Serra de Tramuntana. Over the course of a dedicated week each year, the project offers a variety of themed activities designed to engage participants of all ages. By changing the theme annually, the project ensures that each edition remains relevant and captivating, attracting a broad audience and fostering a renewed appreciation for local traditions.

Key Initiatives

  • Local Product Culinary Competition: A flagship event encouraging residents of the Serra’s municipalities to showcase their traditional recipes, with each edition focusing on a specific theme.
  • Diverse Activities: A wide range of events, including presentations, guided tours, and other gastronomic experiences, designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the local food culture.
  • Recipe Book Creation: In 2023, the project published a recipe book compiling dishes from previous culinary competitions. This book is available for free download on the Tramuntana XXI website and in physical format at selected bookstores.
Impact
  • Valorization of Popular Culture: The project emphasizes the importance of preserving and celebrating the traditional food culture of the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Promotion of Local Product Consumption: By encouraging the use and appreciation of local products, the project supports the sustainability of the primary sector.
  • Reconnection with the Territory: Through its activities, Gastronomic Week helps reconnect the community with their land, fostering a deeper understanding of the Serra’s cultural and culinary heritage.

Key Partners

  • Tramuntana XXI: The sister organization of FIM, under which the Gastronomic Week project is developed and managed.

  • Collaborative Entities: Each edition sees partnerships with various local entities, businesses, and individuals, including APAEMA, Cooperativa de Pagesos Ecològics de Mallorca, Fundació Vida Silvestre Mediterrània, and Formatges Tramuntana, among others.

Future Outlook

Building on the success of four previous editions, Gastronomic Week is set to continue as an annual event, with plans to expand activities and increase participation based on feedback and interest from previous years. The project also aims to further enrich the recipe book with new entries from future culinary competitions, ensuring that this cultural resource continues to grow and evolve.
